Sunderland Medicine Interview Format 2027
Sunderland runs an in person MMI at the Murray Health building, and may include a numeracy or data handling element. Sunderland also uses an interview selection tool before shortlisting: a work experience reflection survey scored for teamwork, leadership, communication, resilience and empathy, with a firm October deadline that catches people out every year. Shortlisting combines academics, UCAT and that survey. UCAT must sit in the top eight deciles with SJT Band 1 to 3, and GAMSAT is accepted as an alternative in defined circumstances. Shadowing and school organised trips do not count as work experience here. Interviews start in early December and run into January, with offers in February.
How Sunderland Selects for Interview
Selection is based primarily on achieved/predicted grades - UCAT and GCSEs are used mainly as thresholds rather than heavily ranked factors.
2027 predicted minimum 1680 (based on the UCAT website deciles); adjusted minimums were 1670 in 2024 and 1680 in 2023. SJT Band 4 is not considered and all applicants are within the top 8 UCAT deciles.
Typical academic offer: AAA incl. Chemistry or Biology + one of Physics/Maths/Further Maths/Statistics (2027 entry data).

Common Sunderland Medicine Interview Mistakes
You prepare strong live interview answers but submit the pre shortlisting reflection survey late or with rushed detail, since you treat it as paperwork rather than a scored stage. Why it happens: candidates focus preparation on the interview itself and underweight the October survey deadline that happens months earlier.
In the numeracy or data handling station you reach the right number but do not talk through your method, because you treat it like a written exam question rather than an MMI station. Why it happens: candidates switch mentally out of interview mode for anything that looks like maths, forgetting it is still scored on communication.
You describe hospital shadowing confidently as your main evidence base, not realising Sunderland does not count it. Why it happens: shadowing is accepted at most other schools, so well prepared candidates apply a general rule that does not hold here.
You answer why Sunderland with a line about the medical school's reputation rather than the region's health needs. Why it happens: candidates prepare a single why this school answer for several applications and do not localise it to the North East, which Sunderland is specifically listening for.
Sunderland Medicine Interview Questions
What did a paid or voluntary care role teach you about working with patients? Why it matters: Sunderland does not count shadowing or school trips, so a strong answer must come from real hands on experience.
Work out this dosage calculation and explain your reasoning. Why it matters: Sunderland may include a numeracy station, so a strong answer talks through the method clearly, not just the final number.
Why Sunderland, and why the North East specifically? Why it matters: a weak answer is generic, a strong one shows real commitment to the region and its population.
Tell us about a time you led a team under pressure. Why it matters: this maps directly to Sunderland's named attributes of teamwork and leadership, so vague examples score poorly.
How to Prepare for a Sunderland Medicine Interview
The session reproduces the mmi circuit University of Sunderland School of Medicine uses, so the pacing, pressure and thinking being tested match the real day.
In person style circuit with a numeracy station. We include a data handling or numeracy task, since Sunderland may test this alongside standard MMI stations.
Work experience rebuilt around five attributes. We restructure your examples against teamwork, leadership, communication, resilience and empathy, matching Sunderland's own scoring.
Support with your interview selection tool reflections. Your tutor helps shape written reflections for the pre interview survey, which Sunderland uses before shortlisting.
Feedback on evidence quality and regional fit. Thirty minutes reviewing whether your examples were concrete enough and whether your North East motivation was genuine.
