The majority of the ~55 places each year are Scottish-domiciled (Scottish Government funded), with a small number of RUK places. RUK applicants are competitive but the numbers are limited.
A Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) hosted by St Andrews, usually in-person. Stations assess motivation, generalism / rural practice insight, ethics, empathy, teamwork, leadership and resilience. Successful applicants must also pass Occupational Health and PVG clearance.
The MBChB is awarded jointly by the University of St Andrews and the University of Dundee. Years 1-2 are in St Andrews; Years 3-4 in Dundee with placements across NHS Fife, Tayside, Highland and Dumfries & Galloway.
Scottish-domiciled tuition fees are paid by SAAS; RUK fees are around £9,250 per year. Eligible students can also receive the ScotGEM Bursary of £4,000 per year (up to £16,000) in exchange for one year of NHS Scotland service per year of bursary received.
Instead of traditional short block rotations, Year 3 students spend the year embedded in NHS Highland or NHS Dumfries & Galloway, following patients over time across specialties in a rural / remote generalist setting - the defining feature of the programme.
