As the UCAS medicine deadline of 15 October approaches, choosing your four universities is one of the highest-stakes decisions of the whole application. A strategic application means applying where your stats give you the best chance of an interview, not just where you most want to study.
Every year, strong applicants receive four rejections before interview because they chose universities that were never realistic for their profile. A common example: a student with a UCAT score of 2600 applies to a university whose recent cut-off was 2650. However good the rest of the application is, that choice was lost before it began.
The fix is simple in principle. Research how each university shortlists, match your stats against their criteria, and only apply where the numbers work in your favour.
Every UK medical school uses a different formula. Some rank applicants almost entirely on UCAT score. Others weight GCSEs heavily, or use a points system that combines academics and UCAT. A few assess the personal statement before interview, while many ignore it at shortlisting stage.
In the webinar we show real examples: a university that places 25% emphasis on UCAT and 75% on A-level predictions will favour a student with top predictions and a modest UCAT score, while a UCAT-heavy university will do the opposite. Knowing which is which is the core of applying strategically.
Many universities publish, or release under freedom of information requests, the minimum UCAT score invited to interview in previous cycles. These cut-offs move each year, so a score that was safe last year may be below the line this year. We explain how to interpret cut-offs, how much they typically move, and which universities announce their threshold only after applications close, making them a gamble rather than a safe choice.
We also cover what to do if your UCAT score is lower than you hoped: which universities place less emphasis on UCAT, and which score bands suit which shortlists.
