A-Level results day is Thursday 13 August 2026. For medicine and dentistry applicants, it is one of the most nerve-wracking mornings of the year. However, understanding exactly what happens and what to do at each stage can make the difference between a confirmed place and a missed opportunity.
Most schools open from 8:00am on results day. If you cannot collect in person, many schools will email or post your results. You will need your grades, your UCAS number, and your Clearing number (found on the UCAS Hub once results are published) to act quickly on the morning.
Before results day, log into your UCAS Hub and make sure all your details are up to date. Have your phone charged, a notepad ready, and a list of universities you would consider through Clearing; preparation on the night before saves precious time when places are filling fast.
Once your results are in, check your UCAS Hub. If you meet the conditions of your firm or insurance offer, your place will show as 'Unconditional' and you are in. If you narrowly miss your grades, your status may still change - universities sometimes accept applicants who fall a few points short, but this is not guaranteed.
If your status shows 'Unsuccessful' or 'In Clearing', you need to act fast. Clearing opens for applications once you know your results, and popular courses fill within hours. Medicine and dentistry places in Clearing are extremely limited, so knowing which universities to call and having a script ready is essential.
Clearing is the UCAS process that matches applicants without a confirmed place to universities with unfilled course vacancies. For medicine and dentistry, Clearing places are rare but they do exist; particularly at newer medical schools, graduate-entry programmes, and courses with related foundation years.
Traditional medical schools such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial rarely have Clearing places. However, some universities including Aston, Brunel, Edge Hill, and the University of Central Lancashire have offered medicine places through Clearing in previous years. Dentistry Clearing places are even rarer but have appeared at universities like Plymouth and Queen Mary.
The key is to check the UCAS Clearing vacancy list as soon as it goes live and call universities directly. Speak to the admissions team, not just the general Clearing hotline; they can tell you whether they will consider your grades, your UCAT score, and whether you already hold an offer elsewhere.
When you call a university during Clearing, have your UCAS Personal ID, Clearing number, A-Level grades, UCAT score, and GCSE grades ready. Be prepared to explain why you want to study at that particular university and what makes you a strong candidate despite not meeting your original offer.
Write a short script before you call: introduce yourself, state your grades and UCAT score, and ask directly whether they have any medicine or dentistry places available for an applicant with your profile. If the answer is yes, ask what the next step is and how quickly you need to add them as a Clearing choice on your UCAS Hub.
If Clearing does not yield a medicine place, there are several realistic alternatives. Foundation year or gateway to medicine programmes (such as those at Lancaster, Sheffield, or Nottingham) may accept applicants who narrowly missed the standard entry requirements. Some students also take a gap year and reapply with achieved grades, which can strengthen their application.
Results day is as much about staying calm and making clear-headed decisions as it is about grades. Here are practical tips for students and parents to navigate the day effectively.
Wake up early and collect your results as soon as your school opens. If you need to enter Clearing, time is critical - medical school places can disappear within the first few hours. Keep a spreadsheet or notepad with the university name, phone number, course code, and the name of the person you spoke to at each call.
Do not panic if you miss your grades. Many successful doctors did not get in on their first attempt. Take a breath, call your insurance university, check Clearing, and consider your options. This webinar will walk you through exactly what to do at each stage.
Your role on results day is to stay calm and be a sounding board. Avoid calling universities on your child's behalf; admissions teams will usually only speak to the applicant directly. Instead, help by researching Clearing vacancies, printing out course details, and keeping a record of each call.
Make sure your child eats breakfast and takes breaks between calls. If they miss their grades, reassure them that there are multiple pathways into medicine and dentistry.
