How to use it in your application

  1. 1

    Attend live and take notes

Write down the cases, the team roles and anything that surprised you.

  2. 2

    Reflect, don't just list

Schools want what you learned, not where you were. Note what each case taught you about the job.

  3. 3

Use it in your personal statement

Pick one or two moments and write about them in depth, with your reflection.

  4. 4

    Bring it up at interview

Keep your certificate and notes so you can speak about the session clearly and honestly.

FAQs

Everything you need to know

Who is this virtual conference for?

Ideal for students in Years 10–13 (or equivalent) considering medicine or dentistry in the UK. Whether you're just exploring or actively preparing your application, this event is designed for you.

Is the conference free to attend?

Yes - both the Virtual Medicine Conference and the Virtual Dentistry Conference are completely free for all students.

Can I attend both days?

Absolutely. Many students attend both - the Medicine day on Saturday 31st October and the Dentistry day on Sunday 1st November. Just register for each one separately.

What will I learn during the conference?

You'll gain insights into the application process, tips on the new personal statement format, UCAT and interview preparation guidance, and you'll hear firsthand from current students and clinicians about their experiences.

Will I receive a certificate for attending?

Yes - attendees receive a certificate of participation, which can be used as evidence of career engagement or virtual work experience.

Do I need any prior experience to attend?

Not at all. The conference is suitable for complete beginners and for students who have already explored medicine or dentistry as a career.

Can international students attend?

Yes - international students are welcome. The content focuses on UK admissions but much of the advice is relevant globally.

Can parents or teachers attend?

Yes, parents and teachers are encouraged to attend so they can better support students through the application process.

Will there be live Q&A?

Yes - live Q&A throughout, so you can ask questions directly to current students and admissions experts.

Does virtual work experience count for medicine and dentistry?

Yes. UK medical and dental schools care far more about what you learned than where you were. Virtual work experience is widely accepted, and you can write about it in your personal statement and talk about it at interview as long as you reflect on it properly.

How do I get work experience for medicine or dentistry in Year 12?

Start with what is free and reliable: a virtual ward round or dental clinic session like this conference, volunteering in a care home or charity shop, and speaking to healthcare staff you already know. Email local GP practices and dental practices with a short, polite request, and keep a reflection log of everything you do.

How much work experience do I need?

There is no fixed number. Most schools want to see some sustained commitment, often a few months of regular volunteering, plus some direct exposure to healthcare. Quality of reflection matters more than hours.

Can I use the certificate as work experience evidence?

Yes. You get a certificate of attendance after the conference. Keep it with your reflection notes so you can reference the session in your personal statement and interviews.

Work experience guide

How to get work experience for medicine

Most Year 12 students struggle to find hospital placements. Very few are advertised, and the ones that exist fill up fast. The good news is that UK medical schools do not require a hospital placement. They want proof that you understand what the job involves and that you can reflect on what you saw.

That is why this free conference exists. In one day you get a live virtual ward round with UK doctors, clinical terms explained in plain English, and real cases to reflect on, plus a certificate of attendance you can list on your application.

What to do alongside the conference

  • Email local GP practices and hospital trusts with a short, polite request. Keep it to five lines.
  • Volunteer somewhere regular, such as a care home, hospice, charity shop or St John Ambulance. Sustained commitment counts.
  • Keep a reflection log after every session: what happened, what you noticed, what it taught you about the job.
  • Write about two or three experiences in depth in your personal statement rather than listing everything you did.

Keep going after the conference
